Open Call Projects
As part of the GÉANT Innovation Programme, the Open Call projects bring in fresh ideas and support new uses of the network. There are 21 projects within the Open Call initiative, each aligned to one of the
GÉANT joint research activities in the project's innovation programme. All Open Call projects sit within one of four subject areas:
-
Applications and Tools – supporting advanced research activities and projects.
-
Authentication – helping support secure end-to-end authentication of systems and people.
-
Network Architecture and Optical Projects – studying future networking systems.
-
SDN - exploring Software Defined Networking potential to meet new networking demands.

The Open Call Initiative
The first GÉANT Open Call was launched on 1st April 2013 and closed on 29th April 2013. It was highly oversubscribed with a total of 70 projects received across 18 topic areas. Following a rigorous evaluation process 21 innovative R&D projects were selected for funding and a total of 30 new Partners joined the GÉANT project.
The Open Call programme is investing €3.3million into these 21 independent R&D projects; they will use GÉANT to support their cutting edge research into advanced networking technologies. These projects will help pave the way to the next generation of services, applications and uses for networking and will support the aims of Horizon 2020 and the challenges of the data deluge.
The projects are divided into four themes; Applications and Tools, Authentication, Network Architecture and Optical technology, and Software Defined Networking. Each project is supported by experts from the GÉANT community to ensure that all benefits from research and collaboration are shared within the community.
