eduGAIN interconnects identity federations around the world, simplifying access to content, services and resources for the global research and education community. eduGAIN enables the trustworthy exchange of information related to identity, authentication and authorisation (AAI) by coordinating elements of the federations’ technical infrastructure and providing a policy framework that controls this information exchange.
At present, 15 European federations have joined eduGAIN with another five 5 European federations aiming to join in the near future. By definition, eduGAIN is however a global service and aims therefore to encourage federations in other world regions to join. Today, two non-European federations have joined eduGAIN (Brazil & Canada). The eduGAIN team is also in contact with other federations outside Europe regarding their integration in the eduGAIN community.
Assistance to R&E federations which wish to join eduGAIN is provided by the eduGAIN team in guiding them through the process and the steps which need to be followed to and team provides the federation interested in joining.
In Latin America, eduGAIN is one of the services which the EC-funded ELCIRA project aims to expand across the region by encouraging and assisting NRENs in establishing identity federations and enabling them to join eduGAIN. Through the involvement of GÉANT partners in ELCIRA, GÉANT is closely involved in these efforts.
