Participants:SURFnet; Janet Objective:To use long term evolution (LTE) as an alternative radio access network for Wi-Fi in the context of federated connectivity provision. Approach:MEAL will explore the creation of an eduroam-like mechanism for federating network access based upon LTE data connectivity. In doing so, MEAL must address the additional challenges resulting from the involvement of third party commercial network providers, such as the protection of eduroam credentials, and accommodating the charging models of the providers. The challenge is integrating the LTE and Wi-Fi protocols in such a way that they offer a seamless service at any location, any time, and via any device, supports new ways of learning and increases the flexibility in doing research. The project takes the ‘anywhere any time’ principle seriously and aims at realizing international roaming. In the context of the trial, this means that devices that gain access to the Janet network through LTE in the UK will also gain access via LTE in the Netherlands (and vice versa).
